Statement of Need
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a highly prevalent condition, with recent reports indicating rates ranging from 3 percent to 9 percent of the population, with higher incidences in school-age children. Application of World Health Organization (WHO) based criteria yielded a prevalence rate of 1.8% worldwide. ADHD in children and young adults is of major concern because of the correlation between ADHD and difficulties in learning, special skills attainment, and psychosocial refinement needed for success as adults. In many instances, pharmacologic intervention is recommended by the clinician, or desired (sometimes demanded) by the family and the child study team in an Individualized Education Program (IEP). For many years, principal medical management consisted of stimulant medications. In recent years, alternative medical strategies have emerged, including non-stimulant medications. Current data suggest that pharmacologic intervention in combination with effective psychosocial intervention can be both safe and efficacious. As such, a wide range of pharmacological interventions are available today to the clinician, but the need still exists for good, disciplined patient work-ups and differential diagnosis to establish baselines for each patient.
Conference Goal
The overall goal of this conference is to improve clinical knowledge, skills, and competency of healthcare professionals regarding evaluation and management of behavioral disorders - such as Autism - experienced by adults and children with developmental disabilities.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the hypothesized underlying basic biochemical and pathophysiological mechanisms that lead to ADHD in adults and children with developmental disabilities.
  • Describe how ADHD are diagnosed in adults and children with developmental disabilities.
  • Discuss various treatment/management strategies that may be effective in the overall treatment of ADHD encountered in adults and children with developmental disabilities.
