Statement of Need
There is a clear need for an educational activity which addresses the biological basis and management of spasticity encountered in persons with cerebral palsy. Review of scientific peer-reviewed literature as well as clinical experience demonstrate a definite correlation between severity of spasticity and high morbidity and mortality seen in individuals with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities.
Both primary care as well as specialist physicians, and also nurses, physical therapists, and other health professionals need to have a better understanding of the biological basis of spasticity which can in turn lead the health professional to a more rational selection of treatment/management strategies.
Conference Goal
The overall goal of this conference is to improve clinical knowledge, skills, and competency of those health professionals that provide services to adults and children with cerebral palsy who also demonstrate spasticity and movement disorders.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the basic biochemical and pathophysiologic mechanisms that lead to spasticity and movement disorders seen in persons with cerebral palsy.
  • List various options that may be effective treatments for spasticity seen in patients with cerebral palsy.
  • List various options that may be effective treatments for tremor, dystonia, athetosis, and other movement disorders seen in patients with cerebral palsy.
